The anime has beautiful hand drawn animation, heavily influenced by popular sci-fi films such as Alien (1979) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), giving exterior scenes a very sleek and stylized look to them, capturing the realism of the desolation of space perfectly. Inside they discover a world built by one woman’s memories and have to navigate their way through before their ship is drawn into the wreckage by the station’s strong magnetic field. As they investigate the signal, they come across a huge ship graveyard orbiting an abandoned space station. In the year 2092, The Corona, a deep space salvage freighter working on a skeleton crew, receives a distress signal whilst out on a recovery mission. The short is part of a trilogy called Memories (1995) along with two other sci-fi related OVA’s Stink Bomb and Cannon Fodder directed by the great Tensai Okamura and Katsuhiro Otomo respectively. Kōji also worked as an animator on such greats as Akira (1998), Kiki’s delivery Service (1989) and Jigen Bakudan, a short story from the anthology Genius Party Beyond (2008). The Magnetic Rose is a Sci-fi horror OVA directed by Kōji Morimoto, known for his work as director for the short Beyond for The Animatrix (2003) and the music video for Extra by Ken Ishii (1995). It is through this that the idea of deep water or space can leave one feeling anxious and uncomfortable and the thought of exploring these environments can be all the more terrifying. Isolation and vast emptiness are a very base fear for humanity, the mind often creating horrors far greater than anything set in reality as paranoia takes hold of rational thought. Overall, it's recommended for anime enthusiasts.Published by and The Yurei 11/01/21 It's like tasting an exquisite cuisine for the first time. Memories is bound to evoke mixed feelings with the three wildly different stories. The character designs look unappealing and is definitely a depart from usual Japanese characters. There are lots of pencil hatching and sketch marks which probably would look better on paper, or in need to be processed by the clean up department. Fans familiar with Otomo's work will find the style unfamiliar. The animation uses a lot of long panning shorts which is quite unique. Gosh, life really doesn't have any meaning in that place. This is a grim depiction of war, the monotonous life lead by people who's only purpose in life is that of the military's. Everyday, the city fires a huge cannon away, supposedly at the enemy we never see. Katsuhiro Otomo's "Cannon Fodder" looks at the life of a child and his father at work in a city that's has cannons fitted to houses. It's still quite entertaining and the use of quirky Jazz music adds to the wackiness of the situation. The plot is really simple, which by Japanese anime standards it means really weak and unoriginal. I find this animation quite funny with the dark humour. The government then sends out the military to stop him, but to no avail. To make matters worse, an official tells Tanaka to deliver the research to him in Tokyo, not realising that he's going to wipe out every living thing along the way. The medicine part of a top secret research. A young lab assistant Nobuo Tanaka mistakenly took some experimental medicine and turns himself into a human stink bomb, a biological weapon capable killing everyone within his vicinity. "Stink Bomb" is a comical story of what can go wrong with really bad body odor. Opera music is blended beautifully with the animation giving a grand atmosphere while we know that something is going to go wrong, and eventually does. The plot is mysterious and haunting, always seeking to surprise. This is the strongest piece among among the three. She ensnares the two men using holograms, creating fantasies of their desires. The signal was actually sent by the artificial intelligence of the singer, seemingly lonely and wants companionship. It's like discovering a lost world among a heap of debris. While most of the station is collapsing, many parts of the opera house are actually still intact, and the interior designs are amazingly detailed. Unknown to them, this station used to be an opera house of a famous but faded opera diva. "Magnetic Rose" is about two space crew who are sent to investigate a distress signal from derelict space station. Memories is a collection of three anime shorts: "Magnetic Rose" directed by Koji Morimoto, "Stink Bomb" by Tensai Okamura and "Cannon Fodder" by Katsuhiro Otomo.
